Paint your diggers pink to put off thieves

Researchers at Birmingham City University have come up with a novel idea to fight thefts at construction sites. They are suggesting that companies should paint their equipment a conspicuous colour, such as bright pink, to put off thieves. The idea is that thieves will not want the cost and hassle of repainting the equipment. How the workmen using the equipment will feel about it is another matter!

The cost of off-highway vehicle theft in the UK is a staggering £1.5 million per week. The average value of each stolen plant vehicle is £15,000 with only about 5% of stolen vehicles being recovered. Stolen vehicles are often broken up for parts. Although modern equipment has sophisticated anti-theft devices fitted the profits involved are such that it does not put thieves off. Most thefts are by organised gangs and the profits often go to funding other criminal activities including terrorism.

It is not just large plant equipment that is vulnerable. Smaller equipment and building materials are also being targeted by thieves. Whether you paint your diggers pink or not we would recommend you consider our security guards for your construction site.
