According to experts, whilst the most obvious security threats to the royal wedding are terrorists and political protestors, the most severe threat is from ‘fixated’ individuals. These fixated individuals, many of whom are mentally ill, have an obsessive preoccupation with a person and spend most of their waking time thinking about them.

According to experts from the Fixated Threat Assessment Centre (FTAC), such individuals are the greatest threat to royals and politicians in western countries. FTAC, run jointly by the police and NHS, was set up to identify and deal with these individuals. They say that the Royal Household receives 10,000 letters a year with “bizarre or inappropriate” content.

Whilst FTAC and the police will be targeting known individuals there is always the risk of there being fixated individuals who have not yet been identified. If one of these individuals were to get near to the VIPs it would be the job of the royal bodyguards and the VIP close protection teams to deal with them.

Fixated individuals are one of the major threats for all celebrities, not just royals. There have been a number of high profile cases of celebrity stalkers in the UK and US in recent years, with stars from film, music and sport being affected.
